Dinner With Friends

New Avenue Foundation

ANNOUNCE: DINNER WITH FRIENDS

A Social Program for Young Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Dates:  to be determined.

Location:  to be determined (Delaware County).

New Avenue Foundation is a nonprofit organizations created by parents.  We are working together to provide innovative services and a brighter future for people with disabilities, and we are looking for committed families to join us.

Dinner with Friends combines sharing a meal with planned social activities. The program is based on New Avenue’s successful cooking class.  Dinner with Friends capitalizes on the activities that worked in that program and places more emphasis on social interaction – with less emphasis on interaction with food and kitchen utensils.

Program Objectives:

  • To promote peer relationships among young adults through structured activities
  • To build self confidence through social activities that encourage active participation and leadership
  • To increase the opportunities for participants to make new friends

Each of the four sessions will include the following activities

  • Ice breaker activities to get the participants to know each other
  • Small group simple cooking activities that promote interaction. A shared meal in small groups.
  • Structured small group and combined group activities that promote active participation, cooperation, role playing, leadership and fun
  • Form many activities the participants will be divided into 2 groups based upon their abilities.

We will select participants with the goal of choosing individuals with similar characteristics to facilitate peer relationships. Young men and young women with more significant disabilities, with their one-on-one staff support are encouraged to apply.  A parent or staff person is required to attend at least the first session to assist us in understanding each person’s abilities.  Based upon our assessment of a participant we may require a parent or staff for each session.

The program is limited to 10 – 12 participants. Program Fee:  $80 for 4 weeks or $25 per week. Please contact Tom Reinke at  tom@thomasreinke.com or 610-505-9388 to register for this program.
