Activities for the spring!

Would you like an arts and crafts activity for your child? We now have one scheduled. Read below.

 

We have partnered with Sillynut.com to hold a 2-session art class. Sillynut’s goal is accommodate young adults who wish to explore art further or for the 1st time. This class will focus on clay – pinch, pull, squeeze, shape, and roll! Our goal is to provide a worthwhile activity.
Experience success in the arts.
The class will be held on Saturday, May 10th and May 17th from 2:00 to 4:00.
The cost is $25 per session and includes everything – all supplies, refreshments and smocks to wear.

Would you like a cooking and nutrition class for your child?

New Avenue Foundation has partnered with Kaleidoscope to announce:
A Cooking Class for Young Adults
Dates: Unfortunately we didn’t get enough interest, so had to cancel the class. But, if you are interested in this type of class, please let us know.

Location: Stephenson Center, St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church. 617 S. Providence Road, Wallingford, PA 19086. Directions are below.
The program is limited to 8 – 10 participants.
Program Fee: $50 per person or $15 per week.

Program Objectives:
• Learning about nutrition and food preparation, and developing basic cooking skills
• Promoting social interaction among peers. Teaching skills in cooperation and sharing.
• At the last session, participants will present a “dinner and show” to parents.

This program will emphasize social interaction, cooperation, and structured social activities as much as it emphasizes cooking and nutrition. Each of the four sessions will include the same basic activities, (1) food preparation, (2) nutrition education, (3) social activities, and (4) a shared meal. Each session will include:
• A social activity at the start designed to promote peer interaction.
• Participants will be divided into teams with each team having a specific responsibility for that day’s cooking activities. Staff and instructors will be paired with each team.
• The meal will include instructor-led social interactions, discussion, and fun activities.
• Nutrition education focusing on that day’s foods and nutrition concepts.
• Structured group activities including songs, joke telling and skits (time permitting).

Week 1: Review of the details of the program and assessment of the skills of participants. Activities: (1) Baking cookies, (2) Preparing a salad, (3) Making sandwiches, (4) Social activities.
Week 2: (1) Preparing a salad, (2) Spaghetti and Sauce, (3) Garlic bread, (4) Simple dessert.
Week 3: (1) Preparing a salad, (2) Baked casserole perhaps a vegetable lasagna, (3) Dessert.
Week 4: The final week we will be a dinner and show for the participants’ parents put on by the participants. The show will include singing, joke telling, and skits based upon the social activities of the previous three weeks. The meal will include a salad, baked meat and potatoes, a vegetable and dessert.

Directions: The program will be held in the Stephenson Center, St. John Chrysostom Church. 617 S. Providence Road, Wallingford, PA 19086. The room is located in the rectory next to the church.
